Sunrise stretches from the 1960s golf-village streets off Sunset Strip west to the edge of the Everglades. It has been a sewer city almost from the start. The city's own utility opened the Springtree treatment plant in 1962, one year after the city was founded. Today the city says every part of Sunrise gets city sewer service. That makes septic tanks rare here, and any that remain sit in pockets of older homes. Those tanks need the same care as any tank in Broward County. Almost all of it is on sewer. The city built its own water and sewer system as it grew west from Sunset Strip. Around 200 pump stations move the city's wastewater to three treatment plants. A Sunrise home on a septic tank is the exception. It is most likely an older house in a pocket the sewer main never reached. If that is your house, the rules match the rest of Florida. Pump the tank every 3 to 5 years and keep the drain field clear. Repair and replacement permits go through the Florida Department of Health in Broward County, which issues them for the state.
The ground does not help a tank here. Sunrise is low and flat, laced with canals and lakes. The city warns that a few days of steady rain can cause local flooding.
