The City of Boca Raton reports that over 99.5 percent of the city is on sanitary sewer. Its conversion program keeps connecting the last tanks. The east side holds some of the oldest streets in the city, like Old Floresta from the 1920s. Most of those streets went on sewer long ago. What is left is scattered: pockets of older homes and properties the sewer main never reached. The City's Utility Services Engineering office can tell you whether an address is on sewer or septic. West of Florida's Turnpike the map changes. West Boca is unincorporated Palm Beach County, with communities such as Sandalfoot Cove, Mission Bay, Loggers' Run and Boca Greens. Water and sewer out here come from the county utility, or from City lines that reach past the city limits. Pockets of older homes still run on a tank and a drain field. Those systems need pumping on a schedule, and a missed one shows up as a slow drain first. Closer in, Boca Del Mar and Boca Pointe sit between the Turnpike and Military Trail. Parts of both have been annexed into the city.
Boca Raton is flat and sandy. The water table sits so close to the surface that homes here are built without basements. The Hillsboro Canal runs along the county line, and the El Rio Canal cuts through the city. Out west, Lake Worth Drainage District canals carry stormwater off the subdivisions. The canals also hold groundwater at a set level so saltwater stays out of the aquifer. From May to October the rain wins some days. A drain field standing in wet sand stops draining, and a full tank backs up into the house. Pumping before the wet season, and again after a big storm, keeps you ahead of it.
