Miramar runs on two kinds of plumbing. The older east side, which the city calls Historic Miramar, grew out of the town that incorporated in 1955. Its streets still hold pockets of older homes on septic tanks. Near I-75, Country Club Ranches is acreage with barns, and much of it runs on septic tanks and wells. Farther west, the newer gated lake communities run on city sewer. We pump septic tanks in all of it, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, holidays included. Historic Miramar is the older east side of the city. The original 1955 town ran from SW 64th Avenue west to University Drive. In 2010 the city finished new sewer and drainage lines between SW 64th Avenue and State Road 7. Sewer service connections there wrapped up in late 2013. Since then the city has also restored about 13,000 feet of gravity sewer between Douglas Road and SW 67th Avenue. Even so, the city still runs a sewer tie-in process with its own septic tank abandonment inspection. That tells you some older streets in east Miramar still hold homes on tanks.
Farther west, gated lake communities such as Sunset Lakes, Monarch Lakes, Silver Shores and Riviera Isles run on city sewer. Country Club Ranches, off Miramar Parkway near I-75, is the exception. Lots there run an acre or more, often with a barn. A septic tank and a private well serve many of those homes. When a septic home does get sewer, Florida rules give you 90 days to abandon the old tank. The rule also says the tank must be pumped out before it is filled. That pump-out is a septic tank pumping job, and we schedule it like any other.
Miramar sits about 7 feet above sea level on flat ground with a high water table. The C-9 canal, also called the Snake Creek Canal, runs along the county line on the city's south side. FEMA maps show flood zones AE and AH across parts of the city. In Historic Miramar the city has rebuilt canal banks for 256 homes. In the wet season from May to October, the water table rises toward the drain field. A tank full of solids pushes waste into that wet soil, and the field fails early. Pumping on time keeps the solids in the tank, where the truck can take them.
Many of Miramar's restaurants sit along Miramar Parkway, around Miramar Town Center and in the new plaza at Red Road. Those kitchens run grease traps.
