How much does septic tank repair cost in Florida?

HomeAdvisor’s June 2026 guide puts septic tank repair at $627 to $3,043, with a $1,829 average. Major repairs run $6,500 or more. Fixr’s January 2025 guide gives $750 to $3,000. A baffle runs $300 to $900 and a lid $150 to $500. In Florida, fixing a failing system also takes a county permit.

Those are national market ranges. What your tank needs shows once it is pumped and opened. That is how our septic tank repair service starts every job, and every quote is free.

What does each septic tank repair cost?

Tank-side repairs are priced by the part. HomeAdvisor and Fixr agree on $300 to $900 for a baffle and $150 to $500 for a lid. A line from the house runs $1,000 to $4,500 to dig up and repair. A replaced tank, at $3,000 to $10,000, is the ceiling.

Treat every line as a market range. Fixr puts septic labor at $125 to $175 an hour, so access and digging move the total. Our guide to what a pump-out costs in South Florida covers the pump-out that starts every repair.

Why do baffles fail, and what does a replacement cost?

A baffle, also called a tee, keeps solids in the tank and out of the pipes. HomeAdvisor’s June 2026 guide prices a baffle repair at $300 to $900, depending on how hard it is to access. Fixr gives the same range. It says most damaged baffles need a full replacement, though minor damage can be patched.

Fixr notes that baffles wear and can crack. When the outlet baffle is gone, scum and solids ride out toward the drain field.

Florida’s repair rule puts weight on that outlet. When an existing tank is kept during a repair, Rule 62-6.015 says it shall be pumped. A solids deflection device goes on the outlet if one is not in place. Our septic tank baffle replacement work reaches the baffle through the lid once the tank is empty.

What does it cost to fix a septic line or a clog at the tank?

A clog between the house and the tank runs $350 to $1,000 in Fixr’s January 2025 guide. A damaged line that has to be dug up runs $1,000 to $4,500. HomeAdvisor’s June 2026 part table lists a septic line at $1,000 to $4,200, and a broken pipe at about $600.

Fixr describes that line as PVC, ABS or cast iron, running from the house drains to the tank. Reaching a damaged one takes excavation. A packed outlet at the tank backs up the whole house, and it shows once the tank is open. When grease or roots have packed a line, we clear it with hydro jetting. Our hydro jetting cost guide covers what that visit runs.

What does it cost to repair a cracked or leaking septic tank?

Crack sealing and patching runs $500 to $4,000 in HomeAdvisor’s June 2026 guide. Fixr gives the same band for tank wall repair. It prices a larger cracked tank repair at $2,000 to $10,000. A simple patch runs $200 to $500, and Fixr warns that a patch may be temporary.

Tank material moves the number. HomeAdvisor puts concrete tank repairs at $700 to $5,000, plastic at $150 to $2,000 and fiberglass at $750 to $7,500. Fixr’s signs of a leak are lush grass nearby, a foul odor, or a moist yard near the tank.

In South Florida, a crack can leak both ways. The tank can lose water into the soil, or take on groundwater when the water table sits high. The liquid level in the open tank shows which one is happening. Our inspections put that reading in writing. See what a septic inspection costs in Florida for that visit.

Should you repair the tank or replace it?

Repair usually wins when the tank is sound. HomeAdvisor’s June 2026 guide puts a tank replacement, with the drain field kept, at $3,000 to $10,000. Fixr’s January 2025 figure is $9,500 to $15,000, including removal of the old tank. The average repair, $1,829, sits well below both.

Florida writes the test into its repair rule. A tank need not be replaced if the health department finds it structurally sound and built of approved materials. Its capacity also has to sit within two tank sizes of what the rule requires.

Age is the other half. HomeAdvisor says a septic tank typically lasts 15 to 20 years. Fixr says major damage or cracks may mean replacement. Our guide to what a new septic tank costs in Florida covers that side.

Is it the tank or the drain field?

Sometimes the tank is fine and the field under the yard has failed. HomeAdvisor warns that a leach field failure can cost up to $20,000 to fix. That is a different job with its own budget. Our guide to drain field replacement costs in South Florida covers it. Drain field installation is a separate service.

Do you need a permit to repair a septic tank in Florida?

For a failing system, yes. Florida law says a person may not construct, repair, modify, abandon or operate a septic system without a permit. Rule 62-6.015 adds that those repairs need prior knowledge and written approval from the Department. In Broward, a repair permit costs $210, or $260 for a filled or mound system.

Not every job counts as a repair. Rule 62-6.002 was amended in July 2025. It says removing a tank’s contents is not a repair if the drain field is undisturbed. Neither is replacing a broken lid, or making minor structural corrections to a tank. Where a baffle, line or crack job falls is a call we make with the county office before work starts.

Broward’s repair packet asks for a site plan and an evaluation of the existing system. The site evaluation comes from an approved individual, or from the department for $140. The form also records the tank’s material and whether it is baffled. The rule tells the department to make every effort to issue a repair permit within 2 working days. The permit is valid for 90 days.

Under Florida’s Clean Waterways Act, county health department offices still handle septic permits and inspections. In Palm Beach County, that is the Florida Department of Health in Palm Beach County.

Why is septic repair different in South Florida?

Groundwater. Miami-Dade County says South Florida groundwater is just a few feet beneath the surface. It is closest at the end of the wet season, around September and October. A high liquid level in those months can mean groundwater rather than a failed part.

Miami-Dade has identified approximately 120,000 septic systems in use. The county says more could be affected in large storms, when soils become saturated. After a flood, the EPA says not to pump a tank during flooded or saturated drainfield conditions. Under worst conditions, the tank could try to float out of the ground. That can damage the inlet and outlet pipes. So a repair after a big storm can wait until the ground drains.

What changes the number on your tank?

The part that failed sets the price range, and access moves the job within it. A lid is a $150 to $500 job, while a cracked tank can reach $10,000. Each item below comes from the cost guides or the Broward repair packet, and each one moves the total.

  • How hard the part is to reach, which is what swings HomeAdvisor’s $300 to $900 baffle range
  • A buried lid, which means digging first; a septic riser lid brings it to ground level for every visit after
  • The permit: $210 or $260 in Broward, plus $140 if the department does the site evaluation
  • Timing: in Fixr’s example, a $200 lid repair runs $250 to $300 on an emergency basis

How much does a septic tank baffle replacement cost?
HomeAdvisor, June 2026, and Fixr, January 2025, both put a baffle at $300 to $900. Access moves it within that range. The tank gets pumped first so the baffle can be reached through the lid. When a tank is kept in a Florida repair, the rule calls for a solids deflection device at the outlet.
How much does a septic tank lid replacement cost?
HomeAdvisor, June 2026, and Fixr, January 2025, both put a tank lid at $150 to $500. Florida's septic rule says replacing a broken lid on any tank is not considered a repair. If the lid sits under the lawn, a riser brings the opening up to ground level for every visit after.
Can a cracked septic tank be repaired?
Often, yes. HomeAdvisor, June 2026, prices crack sealing and patching at $500 to $4,000. Fixr, January 2025, puts a larger cracked tank repair at $2,000 to $10,000. In Florida, the health department has to find a kept tank structurally sound and built of approved materials.
Do you need a permit to repair a septic tank in Florida?
For a failing system, yes. Florida law bars repairing a septic system without a permit, and Rule 62-6.015 requires written approval before the work. Broward charges $210 for a standard repair permit and $260 for a filled or mound system. Under Rule 62-6.002, pumping a tank and replacing a broken lid do not count as repairs.
Is it cheaper to repair or replace a septic tank?
Repair, when the tank is sound. HomeAdvisor's June 2026 figures put a typical repair at $627 to $3,043. A tank replacement, drain field kept, runs $3,000 to $10,000. Fixr puts replacement at $9,500 to $15,000 with removal. Florida keeps a tank only within two tank sizes of the required capacity.
What are the signs a septic tank needs repair?
HomeAdvisor's June 2026 guide lists strong sewage odors at fixtures and recurring pipe blockages. Pooling water or damp patches near the leach field count too, and so does unusually bright green or spongy grass. Fixr adds a moist yard near the tank. An open, pumped tank shows which part is behind the symptom.
