Lake Worth means two places at once. The city renamed itself Lake Worth Beach in 2019. It holds downtown, the historic districts and the beach complex across the Intracoastal. Inside Lake Worth Beach, most wastewater goes to the city sewer. The sewer division runs about 125 miles of gravity and pressure pipe with 33 city pump stations. A master pump station gathers flow from the city and nearby towns. Lantana, Palm Springs, Atlantis and South Palm Beach all feed it. From there the flow goes to the East Central Regional plant. Where a sewer main runs past your street, your house is almost certainly tied into it. A tank inside the city limits is the exception, and it usually sits on an older lot.
West of I-95 the picture changes. Palm Beach County Water Utilities serves much of the central and south-central unincorporated county. Its lines reach a lot of the corridor, and not all of it. The county health department office says western Palm Beach County still adds homes on private wells and septic tanks. Pockets of older homes along Lake Worth Road and Military Trail keep a tank in the yard. New tanks, repairs and abandonments out there are permitted through the Florida Department of Health in Palm Beach County.
Lake Worth is flat, sandy ground sitting close to the water. From May to October the rains push the water table up into the sand around your drain field. Wet sand cannot take effluent, so the tank fills and the house drains slow. John Prince Park, off Lake Worth Road, sits on Lake Osborne. That lake is one of five in a county chain running from West Palm Beach down to Delray Beach. Low ground feels the wet season first. A pump-out before hurricane season keeps a tired system working through the rains.
The Lake Worth Lagoon runs 20 miles past 13 towns, from North Palm Beach to Ocean Ridge. The county and the state have worked on its water quality for years. Septic to sewer conversions are written into that restoration plan. The state's water management inventory maps about 21,500 Palm Beach County parcels as known septic and another 35,000 as likely septic. A failing tank near this water gets noticed. A pump-out every 3 to 5 years, and again after a hard storm season, keeps you ahead of it.
